Something broken, something confusing, or a puzzle that looks wrong? Write to hello@penguinbacon.com. It reaches a person, and you will usually hear back within a couple of days.
Moving your progress to a new phone
Your progress lives on your device and is not synced to any account, so a new phone starts empty unless you carry it across yourself. In Penguindoku:
- On the old phone, open Settings › Back up your progress and choose Export. It writes a file and opens the share sheet — mail it to yourself, drop it in a cloud folder, whatever suits.
- On the new phone, open the same screen and choose Import, then pick that file.
Importing merges; it never replaces. Where the same level appears in both, the more recent result wins. That means importing the same file twice does nothing the second time, and restoring an old backup cannot wipe out progress you have made since. It is safe to import whenever you are unsure.
I think this puzzle is impossible
Every board is checked before it ships: it has exactly one answer, and that answer can be reached by reasoning alone, with no guessing at any point. So a board that feels impossible is far more often a board with a wrong mark on it somewhere earlier.
Two things worth trying before you write to us:
- Ask for a hint. Before it teaches you anything, the hint engine checks the marks you have already made and will tell you if one of them is wrong. That is usually the answer.
- Remember that penguins may not touch diagonally. Corner contact is the rule people forget, and it rules out far more squares than it first appears to.
If you are still stuck, send us the level number from the top of the screen and we will look at that exact board.
Reporting a bug
Useful things to include, roughly in order of how much they help:
- What you did, and what happened instead of what you expected.
- The level number, if it happened on a board.
- Your phone and its OS version.
- A screenshot, if the problem is something you can see.
There are no crash reports coming to us automatically — the app sends nothing anywhere — so a bug we are not told about is a bug we do not know exists.
Frequently enough asked
Is it free? What is the catch?
It is free, and there isn't one. There are no ads, nothing to buy inside it, and no paid version with the good levels in it. See Privacy for what we do and do not collect, which is nothing.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. Not to install the puzzles, not to play, not for the daily board. The app makes no network calls at all.
How does the daily board work with no server?
The date picks it. Which puzzle appears on a given day is worked out from the date itself, so every player on every device lands on the same board without anything being fetched or synced.
Do I lose the daily board if I miss a day?
No. The puzzle itself stays playable forever, like every other level. Only the bonus for finishing it is limited to its own day.
Can I turn off the tutorial?
Yes, in Settings. It only speaks on a handful of early levels, and only when you open a board or appear to be stuck.
Will there be a version for tablets or the web?
It already handles tablets and both orientations. There is no web version planned right now.
