Penguindoku
A logic puzzle about giving every penguin enough personal space. It looks a little like sudoku and plays nothing like it — there are no numbers anywhere.
Coming to iOS & Android
How it works
- One penguin per colony. The grid is split into coloured colonies, and each one holds exactly one penguin.
- Never the same row or column. Two penguins may not share either.
- Never touching. No two penguins may sit next to each other — including diagonally, corner to corner.
- Never a guess. Every board that ships is checked twice over: it has exactly one answer, and that answer can be reached by reasoning alone.
A solved 6×6 board — the smallest size in the game. Boards run up to 12×12, where twelve penguins have to fit without a single one touching another.
What is in it
They open one at a time, and every one you have reached stays playable forever. Nothing is ever rotated out.
365 puzzles that appear nowhere in the main run. Everyone gets the same board on the same date, worked out from the date itself rather than fetched from a server.
A hint names the deduction and shows you where to look. It will also tell you when you have gone wrong, before it tries to teach you anything.
A level pays the difference between a new score and your old best on it. Replaying a board you have mastered earns nothing, so there is nothing to grind.
Mistakes are counted and shown. They never end a run, and there is nothing to wait for or refill.
It lives on your device. You can export it to a file and import it back on another phone, and importing always merges rather than overwrites.
Where to get it
Penguindoku is still in development.
It is going to the App Store and Google Play when it is finished, and not before. There is no waitlist to join and no email to hand over — that would rather undercut the point.
If you would like to hear when it lands, write to us and we will remember.
